Skin cancer is the single most common type of cancer in the United States for both men and women. Skin cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the outermost skin layer, the epidermis, caused by DNA damage that triggers mutations. These mutations cause skin cells to multiply rapidly and form malignant tumors. The main types of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), melanoma, and Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC). The main causes of skin cancer are exposure to the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays and the use of UV tanning beds.
Dr. Kuruvilla is a skin cancer doctor who has a special interest in skin cancer treatment for the people of northeastern Florida. At our skin cancer clinic in Palatka, he may offer Irradiation for select basal cell and squamous cell cancer patients. His skin cancer cure rates exceed 90 percent with either electron irradiation or skin surface brachytherapy along with a high dose rate of Iridium 192 using a customized Freiburg flap.
