Brain & Bone Metastasis

Brain & Bone MetastasisBrain cancer, which most doctors refer to as a brain tumor, is a cancerous or non-cancerous mass or growth of abnormal cells in the brain. It rarely spreads to other parts of the body, but it can spread through the brain tissue. Even so-called benign brain tumors can grow, press on and destroy normal brain tissue, which can lead to serious or sometimes even life-threatening damage. Both benign and malignant brain tumors can be life-threatening. Brain tumors are more common than you might think, with over 200,000 cases reported in the U.S. each year. Brain cancer treatment can include surgery, irradiation, and chemotherapy.

Bone metastasis happens when cancer cells spread from their original site to a nearby bone. Nearly all cancers can metastasize to bones. Cancer types that are particularly likely to spread include breast cancer and prostate cancer. Bone metastasis more commonly occurs in the bones of the spine, pelvis, and thigh. It can cause pain and broken bones. Cancer that has spread to the bones cannot be cured in the vast majority of cases. Treatments can help reduce pain and other symptoms. Common bone metastasis treatment includes medications, intravenous radiation therapy, external radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and surgery to stabilize a bone, inject bone cement or repair a broken bone. The best treatment for you will depend on the specifics of your situation.
